Med Mart was founded in 1992, but our story starts in 1969. Jack Fesman, our to-be founder, started Glendale Pharmacy in Springfield, Ohio after graduating from Ohio State University. He created a whole new pharmacy experience by stocking medical and accessibility equipment on top of the everyday pharmacy products and eventually expanded the operation to 6 locations. Jack sold his first Lift Chair in 1983 and quickly began to transform the medical equipment industry. Throughout the 1980’s he opened 7 distribution centers across the nation and continued his mission to provide the best products and experience to his customers.

Back to 1992 - Jack founded Queen City Med Mart in Evendale, Ohio. The second location in Dayton, Ohio opened 4 years later and www.medmartonline.com was launched in 2000. A third location was opened in 2014 and a state-of-the-art E-commerce website was created in 2015. What began as one man trying to create a better experience for his pharmacy customers is now a successful family-owned company with 3 brick-and-mortar locations, 78 employees, 8 shipping warehouses, nationwide sales via www.medmartonline.com, a selection of over 5,000 products, and home access solutions through www.medmarthome.com. We are both proud and grateful to be able to continue Jack’s mission to give our customers the very best experience and selection of products.

Our team is also thankful to work with many other American companies that have a similar story. We want to share some of those stories with you now to celebrate the people behind the scenes and to support other American businesses.

IndeeLift

Steve Powell founded IndeeLift in 2014 after helping to care for his elderly parents. Steve was working in the computing and telecommunications sector when his parents’ health started to deteriorate. His father suffered from several medical conditions in the last years of his life, including diabetes and dementia, and experienced serious difficulty recovering from falls. When the frequency of his falls had increased to several times a week, Steve tried to solve the problem by using a standard Hoyer Lift with a sling. Unfortunately, his father was frightened of falling out of the elevated sling and there was not always someone at home to assist with the lift. At the same time that his father was experiencing falls, his mother began to face the same problem. Both of his parents wanted to stay in their home to maintain their independence and dignity but could not find a safe and reliable way to get back up from a fall.  Steve knew his parent’s needed a better solution.

After scouring the internet for a more efficient patient lift, Steve decided to make his own. In February, 2014 he began building test models of what would one day become the Human Floor Lift (HFL). The final result was a lift that could be operated safely from the floor, so people could get back up to their feet in seconds without the assistance of a caregiver. The Human Floor Lift “preserves the dignity, safety, and independence of the individual and prevents caregiver injury.” Today, IndeeLift has a family of patented lift solutions that are assembled in Livermore, California. Steve Powell, like our founder, is another wonderful example of the American dream being realized: he solved a problem, patented the idea, and built a successful company. The Human Floor Lift has already helped countless people age in their homes without the fear of being stuck on the floor. We are delighted to offer this innovative lift solution to our customers, and happy to support a fantastic, American-made product.

Med-Mizer

Located in Batesville, Indiana, Med-Mizer’s mission is “to create products that improve patient outcomes, prevent readmissions, increase caregiver efficiencies and promote a safer environment for users and caregivers.” A leader of innovation in the homecare and hospital bed industry, Med-Mizer was founded in 2003 with the release of the first low-retracting bed. Designed to reduce the need for patient repositioning and the risk of falls, this bed was one of many firsts that Med-Mizer brought to the medical equipment industry. They currently hold 9 patents, including those on a pivoting bed sleep surface, a retracting bed frame with 3 position side rail, and an expanding frame relative to the central frame.

In an age where most manufacturing of homecare and hospital beds have moved overseas, Med-Mizer is committed to keeping their entire manufacturing process in Indiana to support the local community and to ensure the highest-quality product. Staying stateside also allows Med-Mizer to have shorter lead times and to efficiently respond to a wider variety of customer needs. Golden Technologies

Despite the fact that their current headquarters in Old Forge, Pennsylvania is the largest facility ever to be dedicated solely to manufacturing lift chairs, Golden Technologies began in a one-car garage just down the road. In 1985 Robert Golden, Sr., and Fred Kiwak worked with local craftspeople to design and manufacture lift chairs that were superior to what was available on the market at the time. They succeeded in making a lift chair that was durable enough to handle many years of use. Once the word was out about their high-quality chairs, demand for their products grew and they started to hire their first employees. Among them was Robert’s son, Richard, who was appointed as CEO of Golden Technologies in 1992 and remains in the position today.

Since its inception, Golden has always operated under the pledge to “build it right the first time.” This motto is displayed on the manufacturing floor as a reminder of the founder’s principles and the expectation of customers. As demand for Golden high quality products continued to grow, so did the business. Once they had succeeded in creating the best lift chair on the market, Golden Technologies expanded their production to mobility scooters and power wheelchairs. In 2003 Golden was awarded a contract to supply their Companion mobility scooters to Veterans across the nation through Veterans Administration Medical Centers.

“We are very proud that the quality and durability of the Companion scooters, and our dedication to this program, has enabled us to renew this contract with the U.S. Veteran’s Administration every year since.”

Golden has continued to make innovative, top-quality designs, including some of our best-sellers like the Buzzaround HD and the Maxicomforter.
